BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Shoveling snow costs injured firefighter his job

A Paterson, New Jersey, firefighter was fired after he was caught on camera shoveling snow while collecting workers compensation benefits, according to news reports.

Capt. James Reyes, a 25-year veteran of the Paterson, New Jersey, Fire Department, was terminated after the city brought charges against him after surveillance footage allegedly caught him shoveling snow, bending, lifting and carrying while he was on leave due to work-related injuries, the Paterson Times newspaper reported Friday.

Mr. Reyes, who earned $148,922 a year, was charged with conduct unbecoming of a public employee and dishonesty in relation to a workers compensation claim, the newspaper reported. The case is being referred to the Passaic County prosecutor's office for criminal prosecution, according to the newspaper report.

According to the Paterson Times, the city is looking to curb fraudulent workers comp claims.
