BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Mark DeLillo receives coveted Goodell Award

DENVER — Mark DeLillo, director of risk management for homebuilding and land development company Taylor Morrison Inc., on Monday received the Harry and Dorothy Goodell Award, the highest honor presented by the Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc.

The Goodell Award, named for RIMS' first president, honors professionals who have furthered the goals of RIMS and risk management throughout their careers. Mr. DeLillo accepted the award during a luncheon at the RIMS 2014 conference and exhibition in Denver.

During a speech to conference attendees, Mr. DeLillo thanked his family, executives for Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Taylor Morrison and his risk management peers for helping him to be successful during his career of more than 30 years — including a mentor who encouraged Mr. DeLillo to become involved in RIMS.

“RIMS is the organization from which to gain knowledge to build a network of colleagues that you can rely upon for assistance throughout your career” Mr. DeLillo said of his mentor's recommendation. “That was very wise advice indeed.”

He appealed to young risk management professionals to get involved in RIMS and to help guide the next generation of risk managers.

“You have the opportunity to participate in a society that encourages professional development, that instantly creates a support network of fellow practitioners. And if you're lucky like me, you can make some great friends too,” Mr. DeLillo said. “But now it's your responsibility to give back and to ensure that the generations that follow you have the same wonderful opportunities that we have all enjoyed, and I urge you to please take that responsibility seriously.”

Several other RIMS members received awards during Monday's luncheon. Hal D. Larson, vice president and risk manager of Muscatine, Iowa-based agriculture company Kent Corp., received the Ron Judd Heart of RIMS Award, which honors risk management excellence among RIMS chapters. Mr. Larson is active in the Greater Quad Cities chapter in Iowa.

The Richard W. Bland Memorial Award was presented to Scott B. Clark, risk and benefits officer for Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The award recognizes a member's commitment to legislation or regulation that benefits the risk management arena.

Melissa Swanson, risk management analyst for California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif., received the Cristy Award, which recognizes individuals who earned the highest marks on three exams required to earn an associate of risk management designation.

William M. Zachry, vice president of risk management at Safeway Inc., was named the 2014 Risk Manager of the Year® by RIMS and Business Insurance. In addition to being recognized at Monday's luncheon, Mr. Zachry is being honored during a Tuesday breakfast at Kevin Taylor's at the Opera House in Denver.

Olympic medalist and former White House staffer Bonnie St. John, who won a silver and two bronze medals for downhill ski racing in the 1984 Paralympics in Innsbruck, Austria, gave a keynote address during the luncheon.

She encouraged risk management professionals to “aim higher” in their careers in order to achieve success, and said they can become stronger in their careers by allowing others to help them along the way.
