BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

U.K. employers addressing age bias

Reprints

U.K. employers are taking steps to address age bias as the country prepares for the adoption of European Union rules on workplace discrimination, according to a survey by the U.K. government's Department of Work and Pensions.

According to the report, 67% of surveyed employers are aware that the government will introduce legislation outlawing age discrimination in the workplace by October 2006, and 57% of respondents confirmed that they avoid using age limits and age-related terms in job advertisements.

In addition, 55% of respondents said that they do not use age as a basis for layoffs.

Nearly 1,200 companies of all sizes responded to the survey.

According to the survey, which was carried out by Bedfordshire, England-based Cranfield School of Management, 31% of employers already have an age discrimination policy in place and a further 38% say they plan to introduce such a policy.

The survey, "Age in the Workplace," is available by e-mail from emma.parry@cranfield.ac.uk.
