BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

  • San Mateo County, Calif., just south of San Francisco,has about 700,000 residents.

  • The county offices are in Redwood City

  • It has about 5,500 employees, 4,867 of which are enrolled in county-sponsored health plans.

  • 3,000 retirees, 1,750 of which are enrolled in the county's retiree health benefit plans.

  • Provides health care coverage to more than 4,000 dependents of employees and retirees.

    The county offers three benefit plans for active workers and four for retirees:

    • Kaiser Permanente health maintenance organization.

    • Blue Shield of California point-of-service plan.

    • Aetna Inc. HMO for actives; and these three plans, plus a Secure Horizons HMO for retirees.

  • The county's overall benefits budget is $55 million, vs. a total annual budget of $1.5 billion.
