8.1-magnitude quake jolts New Zealand, prompts tsunami alert

An 8.1-magnitude earthquake jolted New Zealand on March 5, prompting tsunami warnings and evacuation orders for tens of thousands of coastal residents in New Zealand, New Caledonia and Vanuatu, NDTV reported citing AFP. The earthquake followed two other quakes of 7.4-magnitude and 7.3-magnitude that hit the same region. No damage or injuries were reported from the earlier quakes.
