Japan has an astoundingly low earthquake insurance penetration rate despite being one of the most seismically active countries on the planet, Asia Nikkei Review reports. Only 10% of Japanese companies and about 30% of the total appraisal value of real estate in the nation are reportedly covered by earthquake insurance policies. During the 2011 quake, 17% companies and households had an insurance cover in Japan. Swiss Re Ltd. estimates that the country's annual uninsured losses from natural disasters total $27.9 billion.
