Direct economic losses continue to climb from severe rains across China, with the latest loss estimate being put at 31.14 billion Chinese yuan ($4.7 billion), Xinhua reported.

The country's Ministry of Civil Affairs said that torrential rains across north and northeast China have killed 164 people. Floods have destroyed 1.18 million hectares of crops. About 514,000 people have been displaced in the worst-hit provinces of Henan and Hebei.
