Prosecutors file $44 billion lawsuit over 2015 Brazil dam burst

Brazilian prosecutors have filed a 155 billion Brazilian real ($44 billion) civil lawsuit against miners Vale S.A., BHP Billiton Ltd. and their joint venture Samarco Mineracao S.A. over the November 2015 dam burst, reported Reuters.

The dam burst at one of Samarco's mine killed 19 people and polluted a major river.

The prosecutors are demanding an initial payment of BRL 7.7 billion from the companies.

The lawsuit is also against the two states affected by the spill and the federal government.
