Brazil: Transit workers strike one week before World Cup

Subway and overland commuter train operators in Sao Paulo, Brazil, have gone on strike just days ahead of the opening match of the 2014 soccer World Cup, The Associated Press reported.

The station closest to the Itaquerao stadium, where the tournament’s first game will be held on June 12, was damaged by angry commuters. The strike stranded many of the more than 4 million people who use Sao Paulo's public transport systems on an average weekday.
