Philippines: Crop damage from El Nino estimated at $18.8 million

The Philippines' Department of Agriculture said crops worth 823.3 million Philippine pesos ($18.8 million) have been lost so far due to the initial effects of El Nino, Inquirer.net reported.

The early effects have damaged corn crops worth PHP 583.6 million ($13.3 million), the agency's preliminary assessment revealed.

The dry spell has also affected around 12,200 tons of palay in 4,618 hectares of land and 1,190 tons of vegetables in 242 hectares of land, reports Inquirer.net.
