New Zealand: Cyclone Ita damages west coast totara forests

The totara forests on New Zealand’s west coast appear to have taken the biggest hit from Cyclone Ita, with several parts of forests completely flattened, reported.

Department of Conservation partnerships ranger Cornelia Vervoorn said there is no clear information on how many hectares of trees were damaged, but added that Harihari and Whataroa had been the worst-affected. Ms. Vervoorn said: "You get used to the idea that you live in an extreme weather area and then something like this comes along and knocks you for six."
