Years before the current Washington budget battle focused attention on a split between conservative Republicans and business Republicans the two divided on allowing guns on employer property.
The fight between gun advocates and business came to mind today while reading a Wall Street Journal story on employers grappling with state laws allowing employees to pack weapons in their vehicles parked on company property.
I first heard about a push to allow guns on employer property in the 1990s.
But in recent years a fight over the issue between traditional Republican Party supporters grew apparent, pitting chambers of commerce, retailer organizations, and risk managers on one side against gun advocates on the other. See for example a story available here.
For employers it's about workplace safety and a potential liability problem.
And now I am hearing more industry leaders (presumably Republicans) criticize other Republicans for self-inflicted political and economic wounds caused by forcing the government shutdown.
