BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

London market's 10 most credible underwriters named in study

Mark Pepper, chief underwriting officer at Ascot Underwriting Ltd., has been named the underwriter with the highest level of credibility in the London market, according to a study by Gracechurch Consulting.

London-based Gracechurch asked more than 500 brokers and 200 underwriters which underwriters they believed had the highest level of credibility in the London market.

The underwriters ranked jointly second in the list were Clive Washbourn, head of marine and energy at Beazley P.L.C.; Dominick Hoare, joint active underwriter of Watkins syndicate 457; and Richard Trubshaw, named underwriter for Managing Agency Partners Ltd.'s syndicates 2791 and 6103.

Chris Jones, underwriter for Kiln Group Ltd.'s syndicate 510, was ranked fifth, while Neil Chapman, active underwriter of the direct and facultative property division at Argo Group International Holdings Ltd., was ranked sixth; and Nigel Tatlock, head of the property division at Liberty Syndicate Management Ltd. was ranked seventh.

Jointly eighth in the ranking were Philip Sandle, head of liability at Beazley; Richard Golder, class underwriter at Catlin Group Ltd.; and Richard Williams, founding underwriter of syndicate 20110 at Cathedral Underwriting Ltd.

“Very low investment returns and an ongoing soft market mean that the marketplace is in a very challenging place, and yet almost every reinsurance business admits to ambitious growth plans,” said Ben Bolton, managing director of Gracechurch, in a statement Monday. “So underwriting is increasingly about much more than risk selection and pricing — it is about business development and building long-term relationships.”
