BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Golf tournament draws 118 golfers to benefit Spencer Foundation

SANTA CLARITA, Calif.—Risk and insurance professionals again teed off in some friendly competition on the golf course to benefit the Spencer Educational Foundation Inc.

This year’s Spencer/Gallagher Golf Tournament, sponsored by Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., drew 118 golfers Sunday morning to the Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita, Calif., approximately 25 miles north of Los Angeles.

Last year’s outing in Philadelphia included 96 players and raised $38,000 for the Spencer Foundation. Tournament organizers expect this year’s event to raise more than $40,000.

All proceeds from the tournament, which Arthur J. Gallagher has sponsored for 22 years, go to benefit the Spencer Educational Foundation Inc., a RIMS-affiliated charitable organization that awards scholarships and educational grants to students pursuing an education in risk management and related fields.

“We’re funding the future,” said Jennifer Reno, manager of international insurance for FMC Corp., based in Philadelphia.

Ms. Reno said that Spencer Educational Foundation encourages students to join the risk management and insurance industry through its scholarships.

“This is a great industry to all of us,” Ms. Reno said. “We want to share that with other people so that it continues as the wonderful institution that it is.”

Tournament co-Chairmen Timothy Boston, area marketing manager at Arthur J. Gallagher, and Butler Bourgeois, area vice president at Arthur J. Gallagher, both based in Baton Rouge, La., said this year’s outing drew the largest crowd in six years.

“Spencer has an untold number of scholarships. The whole point is to develop risk managers and fund that in as many ways as possible,” Mr. Bourgeois said. “Risk managers are cognizant of that.”

Mark L. Hubbard, senior vice Loma Linda University Adventist Health Sciences Center in Loma Linda, Calif., has participated in the Spencer/Gallagher golf tournament for more than 10 years.

“Spencer provides important resources to help support risk management education,” Mr. Hubbard said. “It’s a great opportunity to support students who are getting started in this profession as their career.”

While Mr. Hubbard said his golf scores over the years at the Spencer/Gallagher tournament may not have been too memorable, “we’ll have fun.”

“That’s the main thing, we’re not out here to win,” Mr. Hubbard said. “We’re here to support the charity and have fun.”

A wide spectrum of the insurance industry — from risk managers, brokers and insurers — hit the links this year to support the foundation.

“It’s a great opportunity to bring … different segments of our industry together in a common cause that focuses on the future and raises some money to give people opportunities to join us in this business that we enjoy so much,” said Peter Austen, CEO, marine, North America for Willis Global Specialties, based in Philadelphia.

Besting the field at this year’s Spencer/Gallagher outing was the first-place team of Don Gibson, Drew Jones and Greg Church.

Kip Radigan won the men’s longest drive award, with FMC’s Ms. Reno taking the women’s honor.

Mr. Radigan also won the most accurate drive prize, while Steven Grutzmacher, Todd Gillman and Craig van der Voort won closest-to-the-pin prizes.

Winners of the tournament received prizes that were awarded at a luncheon after the tournament.

Separately, this year’s NAPCO Spencer Cup hockey tournament was canceled.

Colin Morris, analytics coordinator at NAPCO L.L.C. in Iselin, N.J., said the hockey tournament will be rescheduled for later in the year, noting that the hockey tournament is in the works for the RIMS 2014 conference in Denver.
