Endurance profits up sharply

HAMILTON, Bermuda--Endurance Specialty Holdings Ltd. is the latest Bermuda insurer to report soaring profits.

Endurance's net income reached $174.5 million for the first nine months of the year, up from $63.5 million in 2002. Gross premiums written were $1.3 billion, compared with $623.5 million for the first nine months of last year. The gross written premiums include business acquired from HartRe Co. L.L.C. and LaSalle Re Ltd.

"Despite seasonal catastrophe losses, every segment of our business performed well," Kenneth J. LeStrange, chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement.
