BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Former Markel chief Alan Kirshner dies

Markel Group Inc. said Tuesday that former chairman and CEO Alan Kirshner died Sunday.

Mr. Kirshner, 88, joined the Richmond, Virginia-based insurer in 1960 and helped build it from a privately held regional insurer into a publicly traded company with national and international operations.

He joined Markel’s board of directors in 1978 and was named chairman and CEO in 1986 when the company went public.

Mr. Kirshner was CEO of the company through 2015 and was named executive chairman in 2016. He retired in 2020.
