Juan Calvimontes, the deputy civil defense minister of Bolivia, said on Jan. 23 that heavy rains and floods in seven of the country’s nine departments have claimed the lives of at least 20 people in a little over two months, Xinhua reported. The official said that between Nov. 20, 2023, and January this year, hailstorms, frost and severe rainfall have wreaked havoc in 41 municipalities and 154 communities, with the western department of La Paz the hardest hit.
