Ex-Willis Re exec to lead new Guy Carpenter hybrid unit

Guy Carpenter & Co. LLC, the reinsurance broking unit of Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc., said Thursday that a former Willis Re executive will lead hybrid solutions U.K., a new division of GC facultative.

Laurence Upton was named managing director and head of hybrid solutions U.K. and joins from Willis Towers Watson PLC, where he was head of London market facultative, the statement said Thursday.

Based in London and reporting to Dominic Samengo-Turner, global head of facultative, Guy Carpenter, Mr. Upton will be responsible for the division and developing facultative reinsurance products.

The division’s senior team will also include Jason Higgins, who was named deputy head of hybrid solutions U.K., and Alex Groves as senior vice president. Mr. Higgins joins from Thompson Heath and Bond, and Mr. Groves from Willis Towers Watson, the statement said.

The hybrid solutions U.K. team will focus on the development of semi-automatic facultative solutions that sit between traditional facultative transactions and treaty programs, the statement said.

“Hybrid Solutions UK has been established in response to increasing cedent demand for more efficient and flexible solutions that effectively bridge the gap between traditional facultative solutions and treaty products,” Mr. Samengo-Turner said in the statement.
