Insured losses from an explosion at a West, Texas, fertilizer manufacturing plant could reach $100 million, according to an insurance industry group.
Last week's blast killed 15 people — most of them first responders — and injured about 200 more. About 140 homes were destroyed, according to the Austin, Texas-based Insurance Council of Texas.
“The insured losses should reach $100 million as soon adjusters are allowed to inspect all of the structures and vehicles that were damaged,” a spokesman for the council said Wednesday in a statement. “As far as I can tell, every policyholder in West has been contacted by their insurance company and help has been offered.”
Questions about the adequacy of risk management planning and insurance coverage abounded after a West, Texas, fertilizer manufacturing plant exploded last week, resulting in death and extensive destruction.
