UnitedHealthcare wins lawsuit over underpayment claims

UnitedHealthcare Inc. has won a lawsuit filed by four TeamHealth subsidiaries accusing the insurer of underpaying physicians for their emergency services, Becker’s Payer Issues reports. The Oklahoma jury found that TeamHealth failed to prove unjust enrichment and breach of implied-in-fact contract. This verdict is part of a contentious legal history between the two companies, including a $60 million punitive damages ruling against UnitedHealthcare in 2021, and an ongoing case where UnitedHealthcare alleges TeamHealth deceived it into overpaying $100 million for emergency services.
