U.S. insurers paid out $1.12 billion in dog-related injury claims in 2023, according to the Insurance Information Institute and State Farm, which released the data in line with National Dog Bite Prevention Week.

A spokeswoman for the institute reported that in 2023, the number of dog bite and related injury claims was 19,062, an increase of more than 8% from 2022 and a 110% increase over the past decade. However, the average cost per claim decreased from $64,555 in 2022 to $58,545 in 2023.

California, Florida and Texas had the most claims.
