Marsh McLennan reports higher emissions after travel resumption

Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc.’s carbon emissions from business travel in 2022 remained lower than pre-pandemic levels even as they increased 584% over 2021.
The brokerage’s Scope 3 emissions, which include emissions from commercial air travel, rose to 50,634 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2022, up from 7,398 metric tons in 2021, according to its environmental, social and governance report released Friday,
But levels in 2022 were down 36% from 2019 emissions levels, the report said.
“While still below pre-pandemic levels, our business travel emissions increased in 2022 as travel rebounded, we returned to the office, and resumed in-person meetings,” the report said.
The company expanded its data coverage for air travel-related emissions in 2022.
Marsh McLennan said it will continue to use virtual meeting tools to manage travel emissions and its green traveler program.
It is also evaluating the use of sustainable aviation fuel to address travel emissions.
The brokerage’s air travel emissions plunged by 75% in 2020 as it halted most staff travel during COVID-19-related lockdowns and increased its use of technology.
