Wirecard trial starts over $2 billion scandal

Germany has opened a fraud trial of insolvent digital payments firm Wirecard AG, with ex-chief executive Markus Braun and two former executives in the dock over their roles in the scandal, Al Jazeera reports. The trial began two and a half years after the firm collapsed following revelations of a $2 hole in its accounts. Executives allegedly inflated the company’s earnings by fabricating revenue streams from transactions with a web of partner companies.
