BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Retaliation tops EEOC charges in fiscal 2019

Retaliation charges once more represented more than half of the total charges filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in fiscal 2019 and comprised the largest category of losses filed for the ninth consecutive year, the agency said Friday.

The total number of charges filed with the EEOC in fiscal 2019, which ended Sept. 30, was 72,675, which was a 4.9% drop from the 76,418 filed in fiscal 2018.

The number of retaliation charges in fiscal 2019, which accounted for 53.8% of all charges filed, was 39,110, which was a slight drop from the 39,469 retaliation charges filed in fiscal 2018, when they accounted for 51.6% of the total.

In fiscal 2019 the next most frequently filed categories of charges were disability, 24,238, or 33.4% of the total; race, 23,976, or 33%; sex, 23,532, or 32.4%; age, 15,573, or 21.4%; national origin, 7,009, or 9.6%; color, 3,415, or 4.7%; religion, 2,725, or 3.7%; Equal Pay Act, 1,117, or 1.5%; and genetic information, 209, or 0.3%.

The percentages add up to more than 100% because some charges allege multiple bases, the EEOC said in its statement.

The ranking of charges changed from fiscal year 2018, when sex was the second most frequent charge, after retaliation, followed by disability, race and age.
The agency reported also that it received 7,514 sexual harassment charges, or 10.3% of all charges, which was a 1.2% decrease from fiscal 2018.
