BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Maurice R. Greenberg receives Crain Lifetime Achievement Award

NEW YORK — Maurice R. Greenberg, chairman and CEO of C.V. Starr & Co. Inc., received the Crain Lifetime Achievement Award at the Business Insurance U.S. Insurance Awards in New York on Thursday.

Mr. Greenberg talked about how he got into the insurance business by accident after returning from the Korean War, walking into the building of Continental Casualty Co. and leaving with a job despite an unpleasant initial encounter with a human resources staffer.

“It’s a great industry,” he said.

Next year will be the 100th anniversary of Starr Cos., which launched in December 1919, when Cornelius Vander Starr founded the insurer in Shanghai, China, Mr. Greenberg noted.

Pat Ryan, founder, chairman and CEO of Ryan Specialty Group L.L.C., introduced Mr. Greenberg and praised him for his friendship, “intense and deep loyalty” and his ability to identify, develop and retain great leaders.

“And that’s how you build the largest financial service organization in the world,” Mr. Ryan said, referring to American International Group Inc.

Mr. Ryan was the recipient of the inaugural Crain Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.

The award recognizes individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the risk management and insurance sector over the course of their careers. It is named in honor of the Crain family, which founded Business Insurance in 1967. Business Insurance was bought in 2016 by Moxie Holdings, which is led by Adam Potter, founder of the Claims and Litigation Management Alliance.

At Thursday’s event, Mr. Greenberg and Mr. Ryan were also announced as the first inductees into the Business Insurance Hall of Fame. Winners of the Crain Lifetime Achievement Award are automatically inducted into the Hall of Fame.
