The average duration of workers compensation temporary total disability benefits has decreased in step with the declining national unemployment rate, the National Council on Compensation Insurance Inc. said Thursday.

In a report, Boca Raton, Fla.-based NCCI said the average duration of TTD benefits was 140 days in 2012, down from a peak of 143 days in 2009. That tracks with a national unemployment rate of 7.8% in December 2012 compared with 9.9% in December 2009.

The average TTD benefit duration was 142 days in 2010 and 2011, according to NCCI.

TTD durations were still longer last year than before the recession, NCCI said. The average duration was 127 days in 2007, and the national unemployment rate was 5% in December of that year.

Construction and manufacturing firms saw the largest declines in benefit durations, NCCI said. However, the report said durations increased or remained at high levels for employers in the office and clerical and goods and services sectors.
