Magnitude-8.1 quake hits off Mexican coast

The U.S. Geological Survey said that an 8.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mexico on Sep. 7, Reuters reported. There were no immediate reports of major damage but power went out in several major neighborhoods of the capital. Mexico’s civil protection agency said it was the strongest earthquake to hit Mexico City since 1985. U.S.-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said that widespread tsunami waves were possible within three hours of the quake.
