Mining firm fined $66 million for burst dams

Brazil has imposed initial fines of 250 million Brazilian reals ($66 million) on Samarco Mineracao S.A., a mining joint venture between miners BHP Billiton Ltd. and Vale S.A., over a recent dam burst at its mine in the country, reported The Guardian citing Reuters.

Two dams burst at the mine, killing seven people and coating a two-state area with mud and mine waste. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said that the fines could be followed by penalties from other federal or state agencies.
