U.S. auto safety regulator fines Takata $70 million

Japan-based Takata Corp. has been fined $70 million by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for hiding evidence regarding its air bags being prone to explosion, reports CTV News citing The Associated Press.

The defect has been linked to eight deaths and more than 100 injuries globally.

Takata admitted that it knew for years about the defect but fended off recalls by failing to tell the U.S. auto safety regulator.
