Insurers in India call for new building code following Nepal quake

India's insurance regulator and nonlife insurers have been looking to ask the country's National Disaster Management Authority to make earthquake-resistant construction codes compulsory for availing property insurance against earthquake damage, reports Asia Insurance Review citing Mint.

The move is to reduce potential losses to insurers and reinsurers from earthquake damage.

The call comes following the devastating earthquake that recently hit Nepal.

"The premium for non-earthquake-resistant buildings should be made 10 times the premium for earthquake-proof properties," said an official.
