Julie Gelfand, Canada's Environment Commissioner, has said that the country is not well-placed to ensure safety in Arctic shipping routes even as shipping activities increase and climate change melts sea ice, reports Reuters.
Most high-risk areas in the Arctic have not been surveyed adequately, said Ms. Gelfand, adding that there are some "emerging risks" that could grow with the rise in marine traffic. Shipping organizations have until now avoided the Arctic route due to increased insurance costs and the unpredictable nature of Arctic ice.
