Air India insurer not liable for grounded Dreamliners

India's national airline Air India Ltd.'s only recourse to compensate the losses it suffered from the grounding of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet may be the aircraft manufacturer itself.

According to Business Standard, the airline's current insurance policy from public sector general insurer New India Assurance Co. Ltd. does not compensate for losses arising from technical and regulatory factors. The current policy only covers losses due to accidents, disasters and blasts. As the airline's aircraft were grounded due to technical and regulatory factors, the insurer is not liable to pay, said the Standard citing a senior official from New India Assurance. This is a standard clause in aviation policies, sources said.
