PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin opposes a National Council on Compensation Insurance request to increase workers comp rates by 3.9% in the state.
Among other problems, the attorney general said Wednesday that the Boca Raton, Fla.-based workers comp rating organization applied an excessive medical trend factor to arrive at its suggested loss-cost rate increase.
Instead, Mr. Kilmartin said a 0.6% rate decrease is in order for Rhode Island businesses.
Earlier this week, Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley said workers comp rates in Massachusetts will stay the same until Sept. 22, 2012. Insurers had sought a 6.6% increase.
SAN FRANCISCO—California workers compensation insurance rates increased 3% on average during the first six months of 2010 over the same period in 2009, the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California said.
