Workplace injury rate remains flat for California

The rate of nonfatal workplace injuries in California remained unchanged in 2015 at 3.8 incidents per 100 full-time workers, according to data released Thursday by the California Department of Industrial Relations.
The report tallied about 470,600 nonfatal reportable injuries and illnesses last year, with 77% occurring in the private sector and 23% among state and local governments. The annual report uses estimates provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and year-over-year data for 16,000 employers in California.
By industry, the report showed the rate of injuries that required days away from work improved for the California construction industry at 1.4 cases per 100 workers last year, down 23% from 2014. The rate of injuries requiring time off from work in the administrative support and waste management sector was 0.9 cases per 100 workers in 2015, down 36% from the prior year.
Meanwhile, several industries saw more employees missing work because of an injury, according to the California insurance department. The trade, transportation, and utilities sector saw an 8.3% increase in such injuries from 2014 to 2015, while the agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting sector saw an increase of 6.7% during the same period.
