Former reinsurance brokerage executive Sal Zaffino dies

Sal Zaffino, former chairman of Guy Carpenter & Co. LLC, died on Sunday. He was 74.

Mr. Zaffino served in the United States Air Force before joining the insurance and reinsurance industry, in which he held various positions over 40 years.

Mr. Zaffino was named Guy Carpenter chairman in 1999 and he led the company during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, where the reinsurance unit of Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc. was headquartered.

Previously, he served as chairman and CEO of Sedgwick Re North America from 1993 to 1998, when it was acquired by Marsh & McLennan. From 1985 to 1993, he was chairman of Crump Re, an organization he created and continued to manage until its merger with Sedgwick Re.

He retired in 2007. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2009.
