Mary was likely among the Nazerene when she nursed the baby Jesus, as the Bible story goes.
Perhaps Brighton, Michigan’s Nazerene Church hadn’t gotten to that part yet when members of the congregation singled out a young mother in 2018 to inform her she was being "immodest" while breastfeeding her child, the Livingston Daily reported Monday following the church’s undisclosed settling of a lawsuit filed by the mother earlier this year.
"Plaintiff was told her action of nursing her child was immodest and could cause men to lust and stumble. Essentially, Plaintiff was told that nursing her child could sexually arouse other men," the lawsuit reads.
The church eventually issued an apology, amends the mother classified in court documents as defamatory, that which invaded her privacy and violated the Breastfeeding Anti-Discrimination Act, among other claims, according to the article.
The woman, who has since left the church, did not say how much she received as part of the settlement, but said it was less than $25,000, money the settlement calls to be donated to two breastfeeding organizations, according to the article.
