As backlogs bite, port faces $150M in losses

Mexico’s largest port, the Port of Manzanillo, is grappling with severe operational delays and container backlogs nearly a week after reopening from a customs workers’ strike, FreightWaves reported. Issues such as staff shortages and prolonged customs inspections exceeding 72 hours per unit are overwhelming yard capacities, with trucking firms facing missed payments to leasing firms, insurance companies, suppliers and staff, and potential bankruptcy due to prolonged downtime. Industry leaders estimate the port could lose up to $150 million in revenue, and normal operations may take up to five weeks to resume.
