Aon property leader Rick Miller dies

Rick Miller

Rick Miller, property practice leader at Aon PLC, died Tuesday after a brief illness.

Boston-based Mr. Miller, 62, had worked as an underwriter and broker, always focusing on the property sector.

Born in West Hartford, Connecticut, he graduated from Boston College and joined Industrial Risk Insurers. He moved to Alexander & Alexander Inc., which was later bought by Aon, before returning to IRI to run its New York City office.

He later worked at American International Group Inc. before rejoining Aon in 2005 as chief broking officer for national property. He was named practice leader in 2016 and ran Aon’s annual property symposium for the past 15 years.

Mr. Miller was well-liked and respected by his colleagues at Aon and in the industry, said Rob Stein, head of middle market, commercial risk North America, who worked with Mr. Miller at IRI and Aon and knew him for more than 30 years.

“Everybody liked being around him. He was incredibly intelligent, he was a wealth of information, both good and useless,” he said. “It didn't matter who you were, or from what walk of life you came from, he treated everybody exactly the same and he took a lot of pride in developing talent.”

Proud of being a property insurance specialist, Mr. Miller was known for his excellent technical acumen and leadership skills, Mr. Stein said.
