The U.S. Justice Department is investigating Sentara Health's insurance arm, formerly known as Optima Health, over allegations of unfairly increasing premiums in 2018 and 2019 while receiving over $655 million in federal subsidies, Becker’s Payer Issues. The Virginia-based health system raised 2018 premiums by an average of 81% for individual plans after Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield exited the marketplace, leaving Optima as the sole option.
