Bill would keep bears’ paws out of cupcake jar

Bears are after more than just honey these days. And for Connecticut property owners, managing the risks of bear encounters while respecting wildlife has become problematic.

One hungry bear recently helped itself to 60 cupcakes at a bakery in Avon, scaring several employees, The Associated Press reports.

In response, Connecticut lawmakers on Friday passed a bill to allow property owners to use deadly force against bears if they reasonably believe they’re entering an occupied building or inflicting or about to inflict great bodily harm to a person or pet.

No word yet on how insurance coverage might respond.
