Million-dollar health care claims are rising for self-insureds

The rate of million-dollar health care claims for every 1 million of covered employees rose 15% in the past year for self-insured employers and 45% from 2019 to 2022, according to Sun Life Financial Inc., reports Fierce Healthcare. While malignant neoplasm, or cancerous tumors, continued to be the largest driver of high-cost claims in 2022, cardiovascular disease rose one spot to the No. 2 claim condition last year, while the third highest cost claims were for Leukemia, Lymphoma, Multiple Myeloma, or cancer of blood cells, per Sun Life.
