Iowa insurance fraud

A central Iowa couple pleaded guilty to insurance fraud after claiming they stayed at a bed and breakfast while their storm-damaged home was being repaired and submitted 34 fabricated receipts to their insurer for an establishment that doesn’t exist.

Jarod and Latisha Hirbar, of Kellogg, Iowa, were sentenced to three years of probation this week and will have to pay back the $39,000 they claimed they spent at the made-up bed and breakfast, the Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau reported.

The bureau began its investigation after it received information that the Hirbars provided false statements and fraudulent documents to an insurer in connection with their property insurance claim. Investigators said the couple had actually stayed with friends.
