Dispute arises over fallen tree from ‘Shawshank Redemption’

Timber! Tree damage and removal after a storm often leads to insurance questions, but in this case a fallen oak tree in Mansfield, Ohio, made popular by its role in the movie “Shawshank Redemption” is at the center of a dispute between a property owner and a sawmill.

Fox 8 news reports that the tree’s remains were cleared and divided up after it fell in high winds in 2016.

The property owner then contracted with a sawmill to keep the tree’s planks on its property and mill them on demand so they could be turned into commemorative goods for sale.

After the boards disappeared, allegedly due to an employee at the sawmill mistakenly burning them, the property owner filed suit against the mill’s owner for financial losses and damages.

A Richland County judge will begin scheduling court dates in the case Thursday.
