Latvia sees worst floods in decades

Latvia is witnessing the worst floods since 1981, forcing residents of certain central areas to evacuate their homes, The Hindu reported. A mass of ice that drifted in from Belarus has blocked the Daugava river's flow, threatening the lives of people in Jekabpils and the town of Plavinas and nearby areas. Large chunks of ice are driving water levels up while also placing strain on a new dam.
