Japan has fined Apple Inc.'s local unit $98 million after discovering bulk purchases of iPhones by foreign shoppers who were improperly exempted from a consumption tax, Times Now reports citing Nikkei Asia. The authorities claim that the firm violated rules covering duty-free purchases and at least one transaction involved a reseller purchasing hundreds of phones all at once.
