High-intensity care accounts for a rising share of ER billings: Report

The proportion of emergency room visits billed as “high intensity” that don’t result in a hospitalization grew to 19% in 2019 from 5% in 2006, reports Healthcare Dive. The increased billing for high-intensity care reflects not only increasingly aggressive coding, but also ERs’ shifting role in the acute care ecosystem. Clinician billing practices in the ER have come under increased scrutiny in recent years as the amount of high intensity visits has grown.
