NFIP extended as part of federal funding measure

The U.S. Congress last week adopted a continuing resolution on government funding that extends the National Flood Insurance Program until Dec. 16, among other measures.

The resolution provides continuing appropriations for federal agencies and extends several expiring programs and authorities. Its passage prevents a government shutdown that would otherwise occur.

The New York-based Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc. welcomed the extension.

“The reauthorized NFIP bill provides critical financial support to coastal properties, as well as many commercial and residential properties located in flood zones across the United States,” a RIMS statement said.

The extension was granted as large parts of Florida’s gulf coast remained inundated with flooding from Hurricane Ian.
