Hospitals pursued payment from poor patients eligible for free care: Report

Providence Health & Services, one of the nation’s largest health systems, pressured patients into paying their medical bills – even those who were eligible for financial assistance, the New York Times reports. Executives of the nonprofit Catholic hospital chain, led by Providence’s chief financial officer at the time, devised a solution in 2018 for wringing money out of patients — even those who were supposed to receive free care because of their low incomes.
