United Educators chief to retire

Janice Abraham, longtime president and CEO of United Educators Insurance, will retire next year, the member-owned insurer announced Wednesday.

Ms. Abraham, who is 65 and has headed Bethesda, Maryland-based United Educators for nearly 25 years, will retire in the summer of 2023.

A search for her successor will begin soon, a United Educators statement said.

Ms. Abraham began her career as a banker in the Africa department of Morgan Guaranty Trust. She went on to work as an administrator at Cornell University and at Whitman College before joining United Educators in 1998.

Under her leadership, the reciprocal risk retention group’s membership has grown from 900 to about 1,600. Members range from K-12 schools to university systems.

In 2006, Ms. Abraham was named one of the Business Insurance Women to Watch.
