BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

The Florida Division of Workers’ Compensation on Friday reported a significant drop in COVID-19 claims in March and April.

The DWC’s latest report on COVID-19 claims shows 104 were filed in March and 118 were filed in April. That follows 593 claims filed in February and 5,955 filed in January.

Claims filed in March and April bring the total number of COVID-19 indemnity claims filed in Florida since 2020 to 72,152. Florida employers have paid $193.8 million in benefits on those claims.

The division’s report shows the $115.2 million in benefits paid by self-insurer governmental employers accounts for just over 59% of all benefits paid on COVID-19 claims. With 31,932 claims, self-insured employers accounted for just over 44% of all claims.

The $66.9 million in benefits paid by private employers, who accounted for 48% of claims with 34,686, accounted for 34% of benefit payments. Private self-insured employers had 5,534 claims with total benefit payments of $11.9 million.

The DWC report also shows about half of COVID-19 claims are accepted. Employers denied in total or in part 35,781 claims.

Only a single compensable fatality claim for COVID-19 was filed this year. The death claim in January brought the total number of COVID-19 death claims to 112.
